Whip City is a place that accommodated a mighty middle class, who together, celebrated and shared the optimism of an American Dream, the one mirrored with opaque ubiquity, across the rural landscapes of America. AMERICA had equity in Whip City and Whip City had equity in AMERICA! It persevered through times of prosperity and depression.
The optimism of Whip City has aged and the fading specters of Utopia wait for an improved destiny. The city’s pride—post-whip, post-war, and post-modern—is the residue of a different time and place. In this work, it is preserved, peripherally, in a built environment rich with the quietude of muted colors and paint while filled with absence.
